Some personal work relating to the sensation of gender dysphoria.
I’ve been going through a kind of ‘waking up’ period in my life as of late, and it’s heavily influenced my work. Because of it I’ve been exploring a lot of stylistic changes lately, most of them have failed, but so far this string is going to really interesting places. I’ve always been a fan of patterns, but truthfully until I started work on Marian I never really tried incorporating them into my work. Even then I only started with art-nouveau and nature/organic inspired designs, which is kind of natural for me. I’ve been trying to find a balance, between the heaviness of my pencil rendering and the simplicity of flat shapes, colors, and patterns.
When I first became interested in gender themes it largely stemmed from a piece of history I had never known about, but when I finally learned of it in college, it blew my mind. Learning about the Two-Spirit tradition was kind of the starting point of what has become a huge part of my work. Considering this and how much it impacted my work, I started experimenting with different kinds of patterns and shapes inspired by those I saw in American Indian and Indigenous artwork, and what happened when I brought the two styles together. This piece was actually preceded by another I can’t post just yet, but of the two I think this is the most successful. Hopefully this will take me to some new places, it certainly feels more right and close to the balance I’m looking for. And I am really loving the graphite powder.
This is so wonderful.

Sometimes I feel like I wanna rip my weave out and go to church” he jokes, before adding, on a more serious note, “The media has been very attentive, which I find interesting and which is opening a lot of doors. The gender bender angle is fine. It’s just the way some people describe or write about it that I find really backward and often just cheesy. And when it comes to homophobic or transphobic comments, well I find it sad but I don’t blame the often prejudiced minds that write them. Blame is to be placed on our governments and ruling circles that support conservative, religious and backward policies and ways of thinking and of course the enormous lack of education in these matters.

HAPPY LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER MONTH!
Wikipedia says:
Gay and Lesbian Pride Month is celebrated each year for the month of June. The last Sunday in June is celebrated as Gay Pride Day. On June 2, 2000, President Bill Clinton declared June “Gay & Lesbian Pride Month”.[1] In 2009[2], 2010[3], and 2011[4] U.S. President Barack Obama declared June to be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, stating, “I call upon all Americans to observe this month by fighting prejudice and discrimination in their own lives and everywhere it exists.” The month was chosen to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village that sparked the modern LGBT liberation movement in the United States.
This month is meant to recognize the impact gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex people have had on the world. GLBT groups celebrate with pride parades, picnics, parties, memorials for those lost from hate crimes , and other group gathering events that attract thousands upon thousands of individuals. InterPride, the International Association of Pride Organizers, was founded in 1982 and has grown to encompass pride events around the world throughout the year. Although June remains the primary month for pride events the annual calendar shows events in most months.
